In the dim periphery of the nursery, where the moonlight carved long, spectral shadows across the floorboards, sat the Dreaming Devil Doll. It was an antique of exquisite, unsettling craftsmanship, fashioned in the late Victorian era with a porcelain face cracked by a web of fine, amber lines. Its eyes—made of blown glass that caught the pale light like wet stones—were perpetually half-lidded, as if it were perpetually drifting on the border of a deep and ancient sleep. Unlike ordinary toys meant for comforting caresses, this effigy seemed heavy with intent, clad in a tattered velvet suit the color of dried blood. Yet, its most terrifying legend lay not in its unblinking stare, but in what happened when the house went quiet. Locals whispered that the doll did not sleep at all, but rather dreamed—and that its nocturnal visions possessed a dangerous, parasitic gravity, bleeding out from its porcelain skull to infect the slumber of anyone foolish enough to leave it in their room. To catch the doll dreaming was to witness its glass eyes dart beneath painted lids while its carved wooden fingers twitched, absorbing the nightmares of the living and weaving them into a waking, suffocating reality by dawn.
